Project Leadership

The project will need a Project Manager – someone who knows what is required and is able to guide the project through the Commercialising Technology process. The project manager is typically appointed by the management team to take the concept through the Product Development and Commercial Launch stages.

All project managers leading new product development within the Commercialising Technology process must have excellent interaction with all functions of business – this will help when the project team needs a favour or two.

In some companies the title project manager may be replaced by new business development, new product development or market development. Whatever the title, the project manager must be multi-talented. Their skill-set should include:

  • Credibility within the organisation.
  • Imagination and the ability to think ‘outside of the box’
  • Persistence
  • Ability to build and motivate the team
  • Excellent listening skills and strong interpersonal skills

In addition, the project manager also needs to have a good grounding in the business, the products, the customer base and their needs in order to lead the team as it moves through Product Development.
